Discovered in 2009 by Australian astronomer Dr. Will Saunders and his team, Ridge A is the coldest, driest and calmest place on the Earth. It is situated on Antarctica some 1,000 kilometres from the South Pole and it is from there that all weather activity on the continent originates. Interest in the site is primarily as a location for an Earth-based observatory as due to its unique weather Ridge A provides an unprecedented view of the heavens.
For Gordon McPherson, without whose support I could not have written this piece.
Premiered by the RCS Symphony Orchestra at City Halls, Glasgow, 17/06/2011. Conducted by Christian Kluxen.
